Hello. For those of you who don't know me (although I think that's only 2 or 3 of you at this point), I'm Brian, co-admin here at Emulation World. This is the first edition of our weekly membership newsletter. Well, enough idle chat. We have lots to talk about. The mailing list... Obviously, one of our newest features is a mailing list program. It seems to be working properly, but if you notice anything odd, let me know. This list is currently 'announcement' style, so responses must be sent directly to me (hiryuu@emulationworld.com). I will switch it to 'moderated' as soon as I write that part :) The Upgrade... Aside from a bit of tweaking, the network upgrade is complete. The PII/233 which was our only server until February has been demoted to a login/ftp box. Now taking the front lines are a matching pair of K6-2/400 web servers. With the new servers, we now have the capacity to add many of the features we’ve been eyeing in recent months. If you have requests, send them my way. No guarantee we’ll add them, but we’ll at least take a look. Site Search... Speaking of added features, we finally installed a search engine. If you want to run it as is, just link to /cgi-bin/site-search and it will handle the rest. You can read more about it flexibility and features at http://members.emulationworld.com/search.html . Since the search index is only rebuilt once a day, be sure to setup your ‘.nosearch’ file at least a day before adding it to your site. If you want to test drive it, Emulation Zone (http://www.emulationzone.org/) and Dextrose (http://www.dextrose.com/dx_search.htm), among others, already have it installed. Sub-domains and sub-directories... Over the last month, we have added new sites at a blistering pace, with many applicants referred here by current members (thanks, folks!). I would like to remind everyone, though, that all sites and staff members are subject to the rules and requirements outlined at http://www.emulationworld.com/joining.htm , with one exception: you may host a site in a sub-directory of your own site even if they fail to meet rule #1 (i.e. they are new and are not well established yet). Basically, if you are not sure, direct them to the above URL. The rules are designed to give you significant freedom while still avoiding lawsuits and ensuring we have the income necessary to upgrade when necessary. Whew! I think that’s it for this week. Until next time, -- Brian Systems Administrator, Emulation World
