Sorry I missed last week. Given all the requests for that News Updater, I decided to wait until I made some progress on it. Well, you know what happened... Two of the servers crashed within 24 hours of each other. We made a couple software upgrades on those two and upgraded the third while we were at it. One 3am road trip is more than enough for me (although I don't get to see a sunrise very often). Lev and I spent the weekend working on some failover and alert systems, as well as investigating some long-term solutions. Our tests with fake (having one web server spoof the IP of the other and taking over) went fairly well, although work is still needed. We also got a new mirroring program, so now the servers back each other up hourly, rather than daily. We upgraded quite a few programs on the FTP server today. Mostly for new features, although a few security upgrades, too. The mailing list got whacked by the new security (it's better now), but it went smoothly otherwise. So that's where it went... We tend to notice when 300+ MB of server space disappears in a matter of hours. Needless to say, we found quite a few items people shouldn't have (and know they shouldn't have). I want to make a few things very clear here: 1. We have plenty of space, but NOT unlimited space. MP3 libraries, ISOs, and Win2k eat space much faster than web sites. 2. Do not use our services to break the law. I can not and will not be your babysitter. Break the law if you want, but don't drag us into it. 3. We are not a warehouse. If it's not for your web site, don't put it here. 4. I don't like disk quotas. They are a pain. If people force me to use them, the quotas will be low enough for them to suffer with me. From now on, we nuke on sight. What's this attachment, anyway? No, the News Updater isn't ready yet, but it's progressing well. Attached is a prototype for the config file. Suggestions are welcome of course. Here's a quick rundown of the format: The templates are based off Zophar's Domain (http://www.zophar.net). It produces 2 files: news.inf matches their current format (except NewsUpdate uses a 4-digit year) and unixemus.txt which pulls out news on the Unix platform for other sites to use. Some sites may prefer KeepItems over KeepDays, so both will be included. User1 is based on the person making the post, so it's usually an image or signature. In this example, SSI is used to add the news.inf into the main pages. If people request it, I will provide a way to put the news directly in the page. Don't worry too much about the spacing and capitalization. The updater is pretty flexible about that. It seems like I'm forgetting something, but I guess that will do it for now. -- Brian
